(Naples, FL) – Naples based Hlevel Architecture was chosen as the winner of the Gordon River Greenway Entry Monument Design Competition on November 7th, 2014 at an event held at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
The AIA (American Institute of Architects) Florida Southwest Chapter and Southwest Florida Land Preservation Trust partnered to conduct a design competition for the entry monuments at the access points to the Gordon River Greenway. The Gordon River Greenway, currently under construction, is a natural preserve and park along the banks of the Gordon River beginning north of the river’s mouth on Naples Bay to the Collier County Freedom Park along Golden Gate Parkway in Naples. The Greenway encompasses approximately 200 acres of preserved riverfront and environmentally sensitive lands. As the Greenway is not visible from surrounding streets, and is accessed from four locations along arterial streets, this design competition was for the design of entry elements that will identify and mark the access points to the greenway. The competition was open to all architects and landscape architects licensed in the State of Florida and located within the geographic region of AIA Florida Southwest, which consists of Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades Counties. The nationally renowned architectural firm of Lake Flato Architects from San Antonio, Texas was the jury for the entries.
HLevel’s winning entry was “designed by nature and the site, ” said Architect Brandt Henning. “Materials and forms for this design were extracted from nature utilizing local material from the site including cypress and fossilized lime rocks. The design evokes contemporary and timeless lines, while providing a naturalistic fee with the elements of the sign representing the merging of man-made and natural elements.The monument signs are identical at each of the four locations,however the site elements and landscaping will be different to represent each of the unique site. While driving by at 45 mph, they will look similar, and the green DOT with associated access point number will be easily recognizable.”
